SPROUTS SPOTLIGHT - Independence

Dear Mamma and Pappa,

When I do things on my own,
I am thrilled to the bone.
I feel proud of me
When I can wear my own tee
when I can tie my shoe laces and clean up my shelf,
And when I can get ready all by myself.
I"ll take some time to learn, but with your help I will
and if you hold my hand, I can even climb a hill!
It gives me a boost to try,
though in the beginning I may cry!
I may stumble, I may fall,
and make mistakes but, I will learn it all.
Acceptance and trust is all I need,
to grow the INDEPENDENCE seed.
Independence tells me what to do
when in doubt, or when mamma's not with me
Independence is a nice feeling too,
it instills confidence and responsibility in me.
It will help me when I am grown,
to make decisions on my own.
But to learn and acquire this habit,
I have to start now, bit by bit.
Stop feeding me, stop dressing me,
But please do not stop loving and accepting me.
Guide me gently,
but let me walk independently!
Soon I will grow,
And become independent before you know!

SPROUTS ACTIVITIES :   Exciting activity ideas to develop independence in children.
Independent chef: Give child to cut out shapes or letters from cooked chapati with butter knife or child friendly scissors by himself/herself. Let him/her  arrange the cut outs on plates as desired.During meal, discuss how  they found today's meal to be different and what did they liked in it?
Independent reporter: Ask the child to go around in the neighbourhood and compile a small news report of the happenings  of the day. You can make a t.v.  prop for the news reporter using old carton box.
Independent planner: Give an opportunity to the child to independently plan a small trip for the family. The child independently plans the mode of transport, duration of the outing, things to carry  along, who all will come for the trip, when will the outing be done (morning, evening, whole day?),etc.
Independent doer: Prepare a VENN diagram of the things the child can do independently or needs to be helped in. The child draws pictures of things he/she can do by self and that in which he/she need help from others.
Independent organizer: Let the child independently plan for his own/ sibling's birthday party or let him invite friends over for a small snack party. Outline what all is acceptable to you and then let him/her plan and execute on his/her own.
Independent photographer– allow the child to independently click pictures of things related to a theme like plants, animals, people, etc using a camera (with adult supervision if required). Make and frame a collage of the photos or make an album of the same.
Independent shopper: Make a small weekly grocery list. For children who can't read, draw symbol/picture alongside and take the child to the supermarket and allow the child to collect the items and do the billing. Discuss about the items to be bought in the shop beforehand and stick to the list.

In the next issue, the SPROUTS SPOTLIGHT shifts to the theme RESPONSIBILITY with exciting activities which you can enjoy with your children.

SPROUTS RECOMMENDS : "The feather that came off", a book by Sanjiv Jaiswal. The book narrates the story of Chunmun the little bird who takes off on an independent journey, faces problems and also tries to solve them independently. The book is a publication of Pratham books which is a non profit publisher that produces high quality and affordable books in Indian languages.
