SPROUTS SPOTLIGHT - Creativity

Srujan Nagar: Unconventional,  innovative, different - thats Srujannagar for you. Nobody is bored, everybody is engrossed and rest the world wonders how?

One day few people from another place, who were bored of feeling bored, decided to discover the secret of Srujan Nagar. How come folks at Srujan Nagar were active, enthusiastic, enjoying and involved all the time. When they reached Srujan Nagar, they observed people doing everyday chores, but all of them were doing their work differently. Soft music was being played in the background and people were humming as they worked.

Then they heard a man came requesting others to solve his problem. He had run out of detergent and there was no water in his house and he needed to do the laundry. Immediately multiple options were offered by fellow citizens. After hearing them out, this man told them that, in fact, there was no problem at all, neither with water nor with the availability of detergent. He just wanted to put a constraint to see how we all can think differently, think creatively!

The visitors then having witnessed the magic of constraints, realised that this was the formula everybody in Srujan Nagar was using to be creative, to add fun to heir work. They just enjoyed doing differently, pushing themselves constantly by adding constraints. The people suggested the visitors that they too can have fun by adding fun constrains and in the process discover hidden strengths, talents and making enjoying interdependency!

The visitors had an interesting journey back home - one of them decided to keep his mouth shut, another decided not to use his right hand at all, another decided to say everything as a question and while the last one decided to give a compliment to everybody whom he met. They learnt creativity is not about some art, but about a way of life.

SPROUTS ACTIVITIES :   Exciting activity ideas to develop creativity in children.

Play a game of what if with your child wherein you make a statement “what if the sun was pink in color” and the kid makes an another statement saying “maybe and what if the in the pink sun lived a purple cat". Build a scenario or a story using the process mentioned above.
Pick any article (pen, fork, etc) and with the child list out as many uses as you can think of for the object. All ideas, however crazy, are ok in the game. Target 50 uses!

“My planet” – children create their own planet using paper, cardboard and junk. They can give it a name and also make models of the inhabitants of their planet using clay or sketch them on paper.

Collage making–ask the child to make a collage using different mediums like paint, photos, leaves, etc related to a theme ( colors, independence, happiness, etc). Usual stationary items like paint brush, paper, gum, glue, cannot be used. Allow the child to think of alternate materials.

Quiet conversation–Introduce a topic like My friends, what I want to become, etc and ask the child to express his/her thoughts without talking/writing. Child can make use of props to express himself.

Crazy Creatures –Ask the child to create crazy creatures using trash/junk items like bottle caps, buttons, cartons, paper, etc. Name the creatures and build a story around them.
See and do: Ask the child to observe an object like his favourite car, etc in details. Now, give the child any medium like water paint or clay and just let the child be. Observe the creative process the child indulges in.

Blow a rainbow: Give the child only the primary colours in water colors . Give a straw as art instrument and a white sheet of paper and let the child blow the colours to create a rainbow by mixing the basic colours to get all the colours of the rainbow.

In the next issue, the SPROUTS SPOTLIGHT  shifts to the theme INDEPENDENCE with exciting activities which you can enjoy with the children.

SPROUTS RECOMMENDS :  A book about the rain cycle named, "Boondi's adventure" by Arati Luthra Pinto published by IETS Publications. The book describes the water cycle as a story of a drop of water called Boondi and the adventures it experiences as it evaporates, condenses and finally reaches back to her home, the ocean.

mail from Jasjeet Kaur

Submitted by trupti on Thu, 05/02/2009 - 08:42.

I enjoyed going through this little newletter. I know all of us as parents want to do something creative with our kids and mostly end up either reading, painting or playing boardgames. This gives me some ideas to hear them being creative- and who can top the imagination of a child?
I always appreciate all that the geniekids comes up with and would love to be a part of one the workshops. Most  topics are very relevant to my situation and the ages of my kids.  One of these days or in the summer vacation we do hope to be able to interact with you by being there.
Thanks,
Jasjeet Kaur
