250 ways of developing NUMBER genie
- Use observation
- Use experimentation
- Encourage enquiry & investigation.
- Do cause – effect analysis
- Build Hypothesis and then test it out (eg: predict what would have happened to a civilization in history and then read what actually happened)
- Put things in order
- Do systematic evaluation
- Grab and analyze numbers involved with the topic
- Create Problem Solving Challenges and projects with respect to the topic
- Analyze the data involved – build statistics
- Discover patterns
- Do comparison – list similarities & differences
- Guess, Predict and estimate
- Make charts and diagrams
- Use matrix, graphs and other mathematical representations
- Create a formula
- Make models to represent the system
- Make up syllogisms to demonstrate
- Make up analogies to explain
- Create flow charts
- Create games (of logic and strategy)
- explore space and quantity using sand, water, etc in different containers.
- respond to queries in math vocab for eg, give me fewer coins, give me ten blocks more/less etc.
- explore rhythm in any song using numbers and then create own rhythm.
- Find “hidden pictures” in a background picture
- Find your way through a maze on paper or life sizes. Try doing the same blindfolded.
- build patterns in and around for eg in nature (animal patterns), using blocks (red-blue-?)
- cook yummy dishes following and exploring recipes which deal with different quantities of the ingredients.
- make a shopping list and go shopping transacting with actual money
- Have kids predict what they will see on a field trip and check if the predictions came true.
- predict whether for the next day.
- Measure different objects around.
- Do join the dots activities where the dots are either numbered or are in alphabetical order.
- Explore concept of time using different things like a melting ice cube, cooker whistle, boiling milk, etc.
- Explore shapes in the environment and experiment using different shapes for the same object.
- Make your own board game with numbers, shapes, patterns, etc
37. Each child wears a number on self. One comes forward and calls out numbers. The numbers being called out touch the next number by stretching their arm and touch the next one's shoulder. once all have touched at least one more person, freeze and take a photo. Reproduce the pattern on paper by joining dots in the same order.
38. Number piano: on each child's fingers, draw a face and write numbers from 1-10 on ten fingers. then place all the fingers in front. One person calls out numbers and others raise the respective fingers.
39. Weighing machine is used to explore weights of different things in the room. Play a market game and weigh everything. Observe the weights and take impressions of the same on paper. Cut these out and use them to make a chart. For eg, blocks weight 100 gm, trace out 100 gm weight, cut it out and stick it on a chart against the name and the picture of the block. Make a chart of a ll the things weighed by all and make a common chart.
40. Mix three resource boxes and sort out the contents in as many different ways as possible. Each time write down the criterion use for sorting on a roll paper chart.
41. Pick up a book and trace out the shapes from each page on a paper. Cut these out and make a ticket booklet to use for different things done in the class like going to the sand area, computer, etc.
42. Explore uno cards and play the game.
43. Observe a story board and count the number of objects, people, etc on it.
44. Play a game of clapping where you replace every second number with a clap. Explore odd-even numbers.
45. Play bombing the stations and each time music stops, freze and count number of people on each station. Compare which has more/less.
46. Explore filling up the same container with different things like cotton, sand, paper, wool etc and explore and compare the quantities.
47. Go around in the office and interview all people. Ask them how many rotis/dosas/idlis they can have for breakfast. Gather information and tabulate it.
48. Fold a sheet of paper and make it as small as you can. Then open all the folds and while doing so, count the number of folds. Now try folding it other way and count number of folds.
49. Fold a sheet of paper and cut out different patterns.
50. Pass around cards from a deck of playing cards, racko cards or uno cards. Observe the card and write down the number on a sheet of paper. Now from the deck, find another card with the same number.
51. Arrange all the cards in the deck of playing cards in ascending order and decending order.
52. Make a card house and add walls, doors, etc. Count the number of cards used.
53. play a game of i spy using picture cards or within the room WRT different objects in the room.
54. Play a game of jacks in which you throw one ball up and try to pick up other balls from the floor before catching the ball which was thrown up. Count the numbers you were able to pick up.
55. Play fire in the mountain and when asked to stop try to cover as many shapes as you can and count the number of shapes in between.
56. Using playing cards, collect sets of a particular colour or a particular number cards by exchanging them with other players.
