Safety and Discpline

PDF version

Case study - The session went on without too many hiccups today though I was challenged by the safety of the children. The most challenging part is to uses the Gk codes and strategies , Its easier to say - Dont do it  or this is not allowed!!!!! So I have a few queries :

1) Is it safe for the children to do to the Junk room and the terrace adjoining the Sunshine room ?.
few of them ran to the junk room and started hiding and the curtain came down!

2) It was difficult to handle/understand  one child I let him be most of the time as I am not sure if he is able to understand what we say but I suppose he can - is what i realsied towards the end. He tries to disturb others a lot so . i tried non verbal shaking of head, telling him that I like the way he helped Soham search for his water bottle, but am really at a loss how to be with him. When he was disturbing others too much I held his hand . he is strong and slipped away!!!!! Towards the end he was saying to me "You are a Bad boy , u say bad words - i will tell my sister") any suggestions/opinions/material to read ?

3) Is it fine for the children to take toilet breaks when they want ( I think it should be right?)

4) One child went and sat on the steps towards the end of the session. I was at a complete loss of wha to do . I could not  leave the children in the session room and I was worried about what the child was doing. I suppose I need to establish codes but till then what is the best way. (Even if u dont want to answer pl. indicate something!!!!)

any other suggestion welcome.

RESPONSE
welcome to the world of a fairy land where punishment is not allowed - so what do we do
"look for more options" - remember the TTT sessions on discipline.

Few things which you can look into

  1. making rapport with kids
  2. make them feel good
  3. catch them doing right
  4. and RELAX

You can read Eric Jenson on positive discipline. See my reply below in blue
we can discuss more when we meet on Wednesday, 7th oct  for weekly meeting

Make them feel good

One teacher comes to teach Tabla to Dhrupad at home. When he comes - first he ask questions which allows Dhrupad to TALK. He does not have any TTT training.

Remember Circle time session - in the beginning ask non controversial question - allow kids to talk and open up and TRANSIT them to activity (your objective) - there is a poster in GK " make them laugh and when they open their mouth to laugh put some learning inside" . (do not remember the exact words).

Check in your session perpetration - is there anytime when

  • kids are TALKING to you - sharing and you are listening to their stories - a good time to build rapport
  • Kids talking in pairs (remember the day in ttt when you were not allowed to talk to each other)
  • Kids talking, sharing, reflecting in group
  • Ask them to help you - "tell me what are the codes to work on terrace" (they are older than you in GK- they can be your seniors:). "So If i go inside the junk room - what will you do? If You go to junk room what should I do?"  (simple - come back and join in session).
    1. Remind them every time they go inside. Use one word - "dangerous" "focus in the session"
    2. Inform them "it is dangerous" and bring them back to the session.
    3. RELAX when they go inside the junk room
    4. If something breaks - ask them to find a solution. Straight do not get into "consequences"
    5. Repeat the above
    6. Make Safety leaders in the class - take their help
    7. Use consequences only if you are TIRED of the above.
    8. When you are tired of the consequence go back to step one :)

Many of the discipline problems are addressed by making the children FEEL GOOD and SPECIAL
